| REVIEW |
| This film by director Ron Fricke is a meditative masterpiece. Shot on location in 24 countries, the music, as primary component, gives life to the spectacular and evocative imagery of our natural environment and the ancient spiritual traditions that are so innately interwoven within them. This epic, non-verbal film tells the story of the earth's evolution, humanity's diversity and interconnectedness, and our impact on the planet. Baraka is a Sufi word meaning "blessing", "essence" or " breath of life" from which the evolutionary process unfolds. Being deeply embedded in the spiritual life of indigenous cultures, the music reflects the web that ties all life together as sacred. A rich diversity of styles is explored, from the meditative to the trance inducing qualities of such artists as Dead Can Dance, the Harmonic Choir, the Monks of the Dip Tse Chok Ling Monetary, and India's L.Subramaniam. The mysticism inherent in their music as ritual is brought to light and fused together through Stearns' profound original score. |
