| REVIEW |
| Niyaz is the synergy of three prolific artists: Azam Ali - the alluring voice and co-founder of the group Vas, Raman (Loga) Torkian of Axiom of Choice and producer/remixer Carmen Rizzo. NIYAZ (which translates to "need" or "Yearning" in both the Urdu and Farsi languages), the group's eponymous debut, gathers influences from India, Turkey and Persia and combines them into a sensuous fusion of tradition and groove. The album's lyrics, sung in native languages of the region by Ali, consist of excerpts from the works of famous Sufi poets of the 14th and 15th centuries. Rizzo's touch can be heard in the music's electronica factor - the veteran mixer pairs the more traditional instrumentation with dance beats and stylish techno effects, making NIYAZ a trendy, intelligent and highly enjoyable multi-cultural album. |
